UK Number Plate Badges: What’s Legal & What You Need for Driving in the EU
As summer approaches and UK drivers gear up for road trips across the Channel, now is the perfect time to make sure your number plates are compliant for driving in the EU. Whether you’re heading to France, Spain, or beyond, understanding number plate badge rules can help you avoid fines and keep your journey smooth.
Badge Categories Explained
UK Travel Badge
These plates show “UK” written below the Union Flag with no background. This badge indicates the vehicle’s country of origin to both authorities and other drivers.
National Flag Badges (Blue Background)
Displaying country identifiers such as ENG, SCO, and CYM below the nation’s flag, these blue badges also indicate the vehicle’s country of origin. GB and UK identifiers with the Union flag are also available.
Zero Emission Vehicle Badges (Green Background)
Designed for electric vehicles, ZEV badges mirror the national flag format but use a green background to highlight zero-emission status. In addition to plain green badges, these plates make it easier for cars to be identified as zero emission vehicles.
No Badge
It’s entirely legal to have no badge on your number plates. Since these are optional extras, as long as your plates meet UK specifications, your vehicle is legal to drive on UK roads.
Driving Abroad: What You Need
Compliant Number Plates for EU Travel
To travel abroad without needing an extra sticker, your number plate must include:
- The letters ‘UK’ in royal blue, matching the blue in the Union Flag.
- The Union Flag (also known as the Union Jack) in landscape in specific colours.
The standard foreign travel badge has a clear background which shows the colour of the reflective beneath it. For electric vehicles, the background of the badge can be green.
When a UK Sticker Is Required
If your number plate does not include both the UK identifier and Union Flag, you’ll need to display a separate white oval UK sticker on the rear of your vehicle when driving in the EU.
Make sure the sticker is:
- Clearly visible.
- Not placed on or obscuring the number plate.
- Updated – old GB stickers are no longer valid, so ensure you cover or remove them prior to travelling.
Country-Specific Exceptions
Spain, Cyprus and Malta
You must display a separate white oval UK sticker in Spain, Cyprus and Malta, regardless of your number plate. This requirement stems from their non-participation in the 1969 Vienna Convention on Road Traffic. Instead, they adhere to the older 1949 Geneva Convention, which mandates that the country identifier must be a separate sign, not incorporated into the vehicle’s number plate.
The standard foreign travel badge has a clear background which shows the colour of the reflective beneath it. For electric vehicles, the background of the badge can be green.
The Republic of Ireland
Despite not being a party to the Vienna Convention, the Republic of Ireland does not require UK drivers to display a UK sticker, regardless of the number plate’s design. This exception is likely due to the close historical, political, and economic ties between the UK and Ireland, as well as the Common Travel Area agreement, which facilitates ease of movement between the two countries.
Make Your Summer Road Trip Easy
Before setting off on your European adventure, double-check that your number plates are up to date and compliant. The easiest way to stay within the law is to fit your vehicle with a UK Travel Badge (with Union Flag and UK identifier). This will save you the hassle of applying or replacing stickers while abroad for years to come.
