Rethinking Number Plates: Sustainability

The drive towards sustainability and net-zero targets is reshaping the automotive industry. Supply chains are facing increasing pressure from environmental regulations, rising material costs, government quotas & changing customer expectations. As a result, many businesses are reviewing procurement decisions, seeking practical ways to reduce their environmental impact across everyday operations.

For dealerships, parts suppliers and automotive service providers, even products as routine as number plates are now coming under greater scrutiny. Rethinking number plates supply and production seems an easy win given its reliance on plastics.

But nothing is as simple as it first seems.

Rethinking Number Plates

In this article, we will examine what makes a number plate more sustainable and explain why smarter material choices matter more than bold marketing claims.

Why Number Plates Face a Challenge

At first glance, creating a number plate with a lower ecological impact seems straightforward given the industry’s reliance on plastics and reflective materials. However, the reality is far more complex. Number plates must meet strict durability, reflectivity and visibility standards while remaining commercially viable.

This issue creates one of the biggest sustainability challenges for the number plate industry. Many number plate components are petroleum-derived materials, and the finished plates have multiple layers that are difficult to separate and recycle at the end of their life.

Currently, they aren’t many practical alternatives.

UK Number Plates

Early UK number plates used pressed metal with an ink-highlighted registration number. They then progressed to Acrylic Plates, with a printed reflective sheet and rigid PMMA face. Over time the number plate evolved to rely on specialist materials to ensure better visibility.

Acrylic & Reflective Plates

Acrylic Plates
Acrylic Plates combine a printed reflective sheet underneath a rigid, clear acrylic face. Acrylic provides great optical clarity and durability for the number plate. Acrylic is a shortened term for polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), which is a plastic derived from petroleum, mostly from the middle east.

The reflective panels provide the reliable levels of retroreflectivity required by the British Standard. The reflective has a complex, multi-layered construction where glass beads are embedded above a metalised coating in a resin layer and are surrounded by protective films.

Approaches Taken So Far

One of the first attempts to produce a greener number plate was the introduction of Clear Film & Plastic Plates.

While film printing is more economical than reflective printing, it is just as convenient. The choice of a plastic substrate for the backing plate provides excellent durability and ease of tooling or cutting. Additionally, most rigid plastics are highly solvent and weather resistant. Unfortunately recycling numbers were too low.

Film Plates

Film Plates
Printed clear film is laminated over a rigid, reflective-faced backing plate to make a Film Plate. The films are usually made of polyester, another petroleum-derived plastic known for its optical clarity and high tensile strength.

The backing plate is made from black plastic, either Polycarbonate or ABS, with a reflective layer and topped off with an adhesive coating. This construction complies with the British Standards mandatory requirements.

Aluminium Backing Plates
The recyclable nature of aluminium led to its introduction as backing plates, although the initial cost of production was prohibitive. Then there’s the huge destruction and harm to the environment caused by the initial resource mining. Just like Film Plates, aluminium backings require a layer of reflective and printed film.

Recycled Aluminium Plates
Recycled aluminium offers carbon savings vs virgin material by lowering the high levels of energy needed but still requires more tooling to cut. This extra level of production reduces the effect of its sustainability savings and increases base costs.

Tennants Take on Sustainability

At Tennants UK, we decided to make incremental improvements in number plate sustainability. To accomplish this, we focused on practical improvements that can be implemented now. We improved number plate efficiency & introduced recycled materials that are accessible to end users, rather than making plastic-free claims.

We choose a practical balance of materials, reliability and cost-effective production.

Tennants Clear Film
A printed film construction is more economical than an Acrylic Plates, lowering the annual cost of production. As an improvement on the older films, we use a thicker gauge. The film now withstands handling better, reinforcing its established cost-efficiency.

Our specialist clear film is treated to prevent it from discolouring under the sun’s UV rays, protecting any materials behind it from fading. For improved toner or ink bonding, the film also has an ink-receptive coating.

Recycled ABS Backings
On backing plates, we replaced virgin plastic with recycled ABS without sacrificing durability and encouraging recycling. Now our backings use a 90% Recycled / 10% Virgin ratio to maintain the plates durability, impact and solvent resistance. It keeps its malleability and ease of tooling since we stuck to a plastic substrate.

Reflective Layer
Known globally for its performance in traffic sign materials, ORALITE was chosen for our retroreflective layer. Their expertise and specialist glass-bead licence plate film ensures our number plates meet the high levels of reflectivity and longevity required for BSAU 145e compliance.

The Result: Enviro-Plate®

Enviro-Plate® combines these specialist materials to reduce its environmental impact while continuing to meet the performance & efficiency expected by dealerships, service centres and PDI sites.

Tennants Enviro-Plate

Enviro-Plate® is manufactured using familiar production methods. Because there are no major process changes, it helps teams adapt to a greener number plate without any added complexity.

Our Conclusions

As we said at the start of this article, sustainable number plates are not about finding the perfect material or marketing claims. Compliance requirements, reflectivity & durability standards and manufacturing all influence reality.

When it comes to rethinking number plates, time has seen an evolution from pressed metals to recycled materials. This adoption of recycled products and ongoing efforts to improve recyclability all represent positive steps forward. While no number plate is without environmental impact, thoughtful choices can make a meaningful difference.

That’s the philosophy at the heart of Enviro-Plate®.

We aim to balance environmental concerns with the durability, performance, and practicality expected of a modern number plate by combining efficient, recycled materials with compliant components.

The Future
As regulations, technologies and materials evolve, our industry will undoubtedly discover new ways to reduce environmental impact. Until then, making informed and responsible choices remains our most effective tool.
