A new Parliamentary inquiry into illegal Ghost Number Plates & the industry as a whole has been completed and a report released. The report touched on subjects discussed by the media, including Cloned Plates by Jeremy Vine on Radio 2.

The Ghost Number Plates Inquiry

The All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Transport Safety have released their report outlining key concerns around supply chains, plate specification & motorist behaviour.

Recommendations & Consultations

The APPG Report outlines 10 recommendations, all of which align with our long-standing commitment to quality & compliance. These proposals are now driving momentum in Westminster, with legislative and supply-chain reforms expected to follow. At the same time, the BSI consultation on future updates to the specification gives manufacturers a crucial chance to shape the next generation of number plates. Once the consultation closes, feedback will be reviewed and a rollout plan & timeline established.

The BNMA

The BNMA was one of the organisations who helped fund the inquiry and provided evidence on the state of the industry. Their organisation has a history of advocating for industry-favourable change to improve the legitimacy & quality of number plates.

After publication, the BNMA Chairman Michael Flanagan said:
‘’The BNMA fully supports the recommendations of the APPG. This report provides a valuable opportunity to strengthen compliance across our members’ customer base, ensuring that end consumers consistently receive a high‑quality, fully compliant product.

The Ghost Number Plates Inquiry: Our Thoughts

As BNMA members, Tennants UK welcomes any steps that strengthen product standards, improve transparency & supports responsible manufacturers. Especially since we’ve promoted compliance and sustainability for years, in line with BNMA guidelines. Stronger enforcement is also vital, helping to reduce the impacts of speeding, charge evasion & plate cloning on both the public and the industry.

We look forward to seeing the final recommendations and proposed actions. In the meantime, we’ll continue to lead in compliant, high-quality number plate solutions.
