Certification & Testing
BSAU 145e is the British Standard that specifies the legal durability and visibility levels for all number plates. To obtain our Certification, Tennants sent samples to a UKAS-Accredited Laboratory for scientific testing & accreditation. Passing required our GEL Number Plates to withstand simulated weathering and wear without losing performance.
Here is a brief overview of a few BSAU 145e tests:
Reflectivity & Visibility
GEL number plate digits must not be notably reflective. Registration characters must provide enough contrast to the retroreflective background so they are visible to people & ANPR cameras.
Colourimetry & Photometrics
The British Standard specifies a number plate background & character colours. Certification tests check their chromaticity and luminance factors both before and after 2275 hours of weathering.
Abrasion Resistance
Plate durability is also tested by evaluating its resistance to wear and tear. After 6,000 strokes of a 1kg weight and cotton cloth, a samples background and digit visibility are measured.
Corrosion Resistance
Corrosion resistance is checked by spraying samples with a saline solution for ten cycles of 22 hours each. Any fading, missing digits, delamination or damage to visibility means a failure.
Impact Resistance
3D Plates have to be able to resist accidental impacts & maintain integrity. Our GEL Plates passed tests using a dropped projectile, with no damage detected to the plate outside the impact area.
Weathering Resistance
Number plates undergo simulated weathering tests in a laboratory to assess durability. After 2275 hours of exposure to UV light and water spray, the samples are examined for signs of visual damage.
