What Are Lipped Plates

Another optional element found on number plates is an advertising lip. Lipped Plates are an easy way to add simple marketing to a number plate. Such as your website address or company name. And to avoid any layout restrictions, its located beneath the legal sections on a completely separate part.

Why Use Them

If you sell cars you may wish to use Lipped Plates to advertise your dealership. Because what better way to publicise your Showroom, than having it’s name on every car you sell. And best of all, other than the cost of the number plate, it’s completely free.

Rules and Regulations

As long as the lip isn’t part of the required elements on a number plate, most restrictions don’t apply. In fact, the only real rule for lipped plates, is that it can not be reflective. This is so it doesn’t interfere with the primary function of the number plate. To show it’s a fully separate section, most manufacturers also use a background colour like black.

How to Make Them

Generally speaking, the easiest way to produce one is to use pre-printed components. That way you don’t have to worry about your systems limitations or colour correction. Especially if you want white text on a black background. Moreover, your supplier can ensure it’s compatible with your current setup.

Alternately you can print your own lips using our Plates Software. But you will need a high-end system capable of printing onto dark backgrounds. Which usually means a printer that can produce white. And be willing to use oversized media and trim down to fit, since standard printers can’t do edge to edge.
